Convert a backup

Drop your iPhone backup folder here or click to choose it. Not sure where it lives? The walkthrough below shows you, click by click.

Your messages never leave your browser. The whole conversion happens on your machine. One conversion is one run of one backup, however many conversations you tick.

how it works

Three steps. Your messages never leave your machine.

i.

Back up your iPhone to your computer

A normal Finder or iTunes backup, the kind you may already have. Encrypted backups work, that's most of them, you'll just need the backup password.

ii.

Open the backup folder here

Point the converter at the backup folder and it lists every conversation it finds. Pick the ones you want, or keep the lot.

iii.

Download your PDFs

One clean PDF per conversation, photos included, dated and labelled. A single conversation downloads as a PDF, more than one arrives as a zip.

finding your backup

Where your iPhone backup lives, click by click.

On a Mac

  1. Plug your iPhone in and open Finder. Your iPhone appears in the sidebar under Locations. Click it.
  2. In the General tab, choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac, then click Back Up Now. If "Encrypt local backup" is ticked, you'll need the password you set, the converter handles encrypted backups fine.
  3. When the backup finishes, click Manage Backups, right click your backup in the list, and choose Show in Finder.
  4. Finder opens with the backup folder selected, it has a long jumbled name of letters and numbers. That folder is what you drop into the converter above.

If you'd rather go straight there: in Finder press Cmd Shift G and paste ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup, then pick the folder inside.

On Windows

  1. Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store (or use iTunes if you already have it). Plug your iPhone in and click it when it appears.
  2. Under Backups, choose Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this PC, then click Back Up Now. Encrypted is fine, you'll just need the backup password.
  3. When it finishes, open File Explorer, paste %appdata%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup into the address bar and press Enter. If that comes up empty and you used the Microsoft Store version of iTunes or Apple Devices, paste %userprofile%\Apple\MobileSync\Backup instead.
  4. Inside is a folder with a long jumbled name of letters and numbers. That folder is what you drop into the converter above.

If you see more than one jumbled folder, you have backups from more than one device. Pick the one whose date matches the backup you just made.

questions

The things people ask before buying.

Do my messages get uploaded anywhere?

No. The backup is opened, decrypted, and converted in your browser, on your machine. Your messages, your photos, and your backup password never touch a server, so there is nothing for anyone to see, scan, or keep.

Does it work with encrypted backups?

Yes, and that matters because most backups are encrypted. You'll be asked for the backup password, it's the one you set in Finder or iTunes, and it's used on your machine only, to unlock the backup right there in the browser.

What counts as one conversion?

One conversion is one run of one backup, the whole thing. Tick one conversation, ten, or all of them inside a single run and it still counts as one. Failed runs don't count at all.

What ends up in the PDFs?

Your messages with names, dates and times, one PDF per conversation. Group chats, photos, tapback reactions, and edited messages (showing the final text) are all in. Audio messages, videos, stickers, and link previews aren't included in v1, they appear as small labelled placeholders so you can see where they were.

Can I do this straight from my iPhone?

No, and that's Apple's design rather than ours. Your message history only leaves the phone inside a backup, so you need a computer with a Finder or iTunes backup on it. The walkthrough above takes about ten minutes the first time.

My backup is huge. Will this cope?

Yes. The converter reads only what it needs, the message database and the photos in the conversations you tick. A 100 GB backup is fine because almost all of it is never touched.

What do I get for $14?

A licence key covering 5 conversions, emailed to you straight after payment. That's five backups' worth, handy for old backups, second devices, or family phones. No subscription, no account, no monthly creep.

What if I need more conversions later?

Top-ups are available whenever you need them, priced at checkout. Your existing licence key keeps working, it just gets more conversions added to it.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in the browser you already have, on Mac or Windows. Nothing to download, nothing to update, nothing watching you.
